ABOUT K&A FLOORING

How long has K&A Flooring been established?

K&A Flooring has been trading from our shop at 54 High Road, Broxbourne for nearly 50 years. The business was founded by Luke's grandfather and has been part of the local community ever since. Luke took over the business and continues to run it today as a family business, working alongside an experienced team of fitters who between them carry decades of hands-on expertise.

Where are you based and which areas do you cover?

You're welcome to visit us in person to browse samples and discuss your project — our opening hours are Monday to Thursday 9:30am–5:00pm, Friday 9:30am–4:00pm, and Saturday 10:00am–3:00pm. We regularly work across Broxbourne, Hertford, Hoddesdon, Cheshunt, Ware, Stevenage, Puckeridge, Stapleford, Nazeing and all surrounding areas. If you're not sure whether we cover your location, just give us a call.

What types of flooring do you supply and install?

We supply and install carpets, engineered wood, solid wood, laminate and luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) for both domestic and commercial properties. We work with a carefully chosen selection of quality brands, including Victoria Carpets, Alternative Flooring and Cormar Carpets for carpet; V4 Wood Flooring and Victoria for wood; Quick Step for laminate; and Amtico, Karndean and J2 Flooring for LVT - to name a few. As an independent specialist, we're not tied to any single brand, so our advice is always based on what's right for your home and budget.

Do you supply flooring only, or do you also fit it?

We offer both. Our most popular service is supply and fit where we handle everything from helping you choose the right product to completing the installation. We also offer a supply-only service if you have your own fitter or prefer to arrange installation separately. We don't currently offer a fit-only service, so if you're sourcing your own materials we'd recommend getting in touch first to discuss whether we can help.

Do you work with commercial properties as well as homes?

Yes we work with both domestic and commercial clients. Whether it's an office, rental property, retail space or any other commercial environment, our team has the experience to deliver the right flooring solution. If you manage a portfolio of properties or have an ongoing requirement, we're happy to discuss a regular working relationship.

PRICING, QUOTES & OUR PROCESS

How do I get a quote, and is there a charge for it?

Getting a quote is completely free and there's no obligation. You can call us on 01992 442 181, email luke@kaflooring.co.uk, or use the contact form on this website. We'll arrange a convenient time to visit, take measurements and discuss your options, and we can also bring samples to you if you like. Once we have everything we need, we'll provide a clear, detailed quote.

How much does carpet fitting cost?

Our current carpet fitting rate starts at £7 per m². To give you a sense of what that means in practice, a typical job covering stairs, a landing and two double bedrooms works out at around 39m² - so fitting labour for that would be in the region of £270. That's labour only; the cost of the carpet itself varies depending on the product you choose. We position ourselves at competitive price point focusing on a quality products and quality installation by an experienced team rather than competing on price alone. We're always happy to talk through the options to find something that works for your budget.

Do you remove and dispose of my old flooring?

Yes, we offer old floor removal and disposal as an add-on service, starting from £4 per m². This covers lifting and taking away your existing carpet, laminate, LVT or other flooring so that the area is ready for installation. Just let us know when you enquire and we'll include this in your quote.

How long will I have to wait between ordering and having my flooring fitted?

Our typical lead time is 2 to 4 weeks from order to fitting during normal periods. Lead times can vary depending on the product and stock availability, so we'll give you a specific timeframe when you receive your quote. If you have a deadline, a house move for example, let us know and we'll do our best to work around your schedule.

Can you fit flooring outside of normal working hours?

Yes, we are flexible. If you need fitting done on an evening or at a weekend and our standard hours don't work for you, just ask and we'll do our best to accommodate.

Will you move furniture before fitting, or does the room need to be clear?

Helping move furniture is something we do regularly and it's never a problem for standard items. For larger pieces or rooms with a significant amount of furniture, we can arrange this as a separate service -just mention it when you get in touch and we'll factor it into the plan.

What's the best carpet for high traffic areas like a hallway or stairs?

For high-traffic areas like hallways and stairs, we always recommend a lower pile, man-made carpet. A durable synthetic fibre will hold its shape and appearance far longer than a deep or soft pile. As a general rule - if it feels incredibly soft and luxurious in the showroom, it's likely to go flat quickly underfoot if it's put down where it's going to get walked on all the time. That doesn't mean you can't have something that looks great; it just means choosing the right product for the job. If you're unsure, come and see us and have a chat - we'll always steer you towards something that will still look good in five years.

What's the difference between engineered wood and solid wood flooring?

Solid wood is exactly that - a plank of real wood throughout. It can be sanded and refinished many times over its lifetime, making it a genuinely long-term investment. Engineered wood has a real wood veneer on top, bonded to a stable layered core. It handles changes in temperature and humidity better than solid wood, which makes it more suitable for most modern homes and particularly those with underfloor heating. Engineered wood can be sanded and refinished too, but only once during it's lifetime, so it's important the first finish is right. For most homes in Hertfordshire, engineered wood is the practical choice. We like V4 Wood Flooring and Victoria's wood range, both of which offer excellent quality at a range of price points.

Can I have herringbone or patterned flooring?

Absolutely, herringbone is extremely popular right now and it's actually something we fit more of than straight boards. We can install herringbone and chevron patterns in wood, laminate and LVT. Amtico and J2 Flooring both offer excellent options in LVT, and Quick Step has some great herringbone laminate ranges. If you've seen a pattern you like, bring a photo when you visit and we'll find the right product to match.

Which flooring works with underfloor heating?

LVT and engineered wood are both well suited to underfloor heating systems. LVT is particularly forgiving because of its flexible nature. Engineered wood works well too, though it's important to use the correct product and ensure the heating system is commissioned properly before fitting. Thick carpet can reduce the efficiency of underfloor heating, though thinner carpet with the right underlay can work in some situations. Solid wood is generally not recommended over underfloor heating due to the movement it causes in the wood. If you have underfloor heating, just let us know when you enquire and we'll make sure we recommend something compatible.

What's the best flooring for homes with pets or young children?

We have families and pets ourselves, so this is something we genuinely understand. For homes with dogs, cats or young children, LVT is often our top recommendation because it's waterproof, extremely durable, scratch-resistant and very easy to clean. Brands like Amtico and Karndean offer realistic wood and stone effects that look great and stand up to daily life. If you'd prefer carpet, a good-quality man-made fibre in a shorter pile will fare much better than a wool or soft pile option in a busy household. We'll always be honest about what's going to hold up and what might not.

Can LVT or laminate be fitted in a kitchen or bathroom?

LVT is fully waterproof and an excellent choice for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms. It's one of the reasons it's become so popular, you get the look of wood or stone with none of the moisture concerns. Laminate is water-resistant rather than waterproof, so it can work in a kitchen with care but we'd generally advise against it in a bathroom or anywhere with standing water risk. If a wet room or bathroom is your priority, LVT is probably going to be a better choice. We'll always tell you honestly if a product isn't ideal for your intended room.

Does wood flooring need to acclimatise before fitting?

Yes, acclimatisation is always a consideration and especially with wood flooring - it's something we take seriously. For wood specifically, we always aim to have the flooring delivered to your home at least 24 to 48 hours before fitting, so it can adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room it will live in. All our flooring is stored at room temperature, but the conditions in your home may differ - particularly in older properties or rooms that are regularly heated and cooled. We don't skip this step as it can lead to movement and gapping after fitting.

FLOOR CARE & MAINTENANCE

How do I clean and care for my carpet?

It depends on the type of carpet. Man-made fibre carpets are generally more robust and in extreme cases a diluted bleach solution can be used to tackle stubborn stains, though always test in a hidden area first. They can also be cleaned with a standard carpet cleaning machine. Wool carpets require more care. Always use a specialist wool-safe cleaning solution as standard products can cause damage or colour change. Even with the right product, always spot test in a hidden area before treating a visible stain. Wool carpets can be cleaned with a carpet cleaner, but we'd recommend checking the product is suitable for wool first. For significant stains, a professional carpet cleaner is often the safest option.

How do I look after LVT or laminate flooring?

Both LVT and laminate are very low maintenance and a regular sweep or vacuum and an occasional wipe with a damp mop is all they need. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. One thing we'd specifically caution against is using a steam mop. In most cases it won't cause a problem, but we have seen instances where steam has caused damage - particularly to laminate - and it's simply not worth the risk. Stick to a lightly damp mop and you'll keep your floor looking great for years.

How do I clean and maintain wood flooring?

Wood floors should always be cleaned with a specialist wood floor cleaner — avoid water-based mops, harsh detergents and, importantly, steam mops, which can cause warping or surface damage over time. Beyond cleaning, the real long-term advantage of wood is the ability to refinish it. Engineered wood can be sanded and refinished once, which can completely transform a tired floor. Solid wood can be sanded and refinished multiple times, making it a floor that can genuinely last a lifetime with the right care. If your wood floor is looking worn and you're not sure whether it can be brought back to life, come and have a chat, we're always happy to give an honest assessment.

GUARANTEES & PEACE OF MIND

What guarantees do you offer?

All the products we supply carry their own manufacturer's guarantee and these vary by brand and product but typically range from 10 to 25 years depending on what you choose. On top of that, our own workmanship carries a minimum 12-month guarantee. In practice, we're flexible. If something isn't right and you get in touch with us, we'll come and take a look regardless of when the job was done. We've built our reputation over nearly 50 years on doing right by our customers, and that doesn't stop the moment the fitting team leaves.

Can I see samples before I commit?

Yes absolutely, you're welcome to visit our showroom at 54 High Road, Broxbourne to browse our full range of samples in person. We can also bring samples to you during a home visit if that's easier. We'd always encourage you to see flooring in the actual room before making a final decision because the light in your home will affect how a colour or finish looks, and it's worth taking the time to get it right.
